Rep. Green statement on election of Rep. John Boehner to House Majority Leader

02/02/06

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Mark Green (R-Wis.) issued the following statement Thursday after the House Republican Conference named Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) the new House Majority Leader. Green voted for Boehner on both ballots.

"John Boehner was one of the original reformers in Congress. He fought to shut down the House bank, and helped bring about the reforms that ultimately led to the ‘Contract with America ' and Republican takeover in 1994. It was in that spirit of reform that John Boehner was elected Majority Leader today.

"I have also had the pleasure of working closely with John Boehner over the years on issues I consider some of our nation's highest priorities - the faith-based initiative and school choice. He has also never once received or requested an appropriations earmark during his congressional career, showing a genuine commitment to fiscal reform and honest government. I was honored to vote for John Boehner on both ballots, and look forward to working alongside him in his new role as Majority Leader."
